This early horse drawn railway was built over a period of 40 years to bring coal from the Denby coal fields into Belper. By the time it was finished in 1842 it was redundant! The 3 mile circular walk follows a well preserved section of the route as far as Denby. We return looking at remains of the original, much more hair-raising, route.
What you’ll need:
Suitable clothing and footwear. The route is on rough surfaced and unsurfaced paths with stiles, through woodland and includes a steep slope.
Meet at Openwoodgate crossroads, Belper (DDE56 0SD), bus services and on-street parking available.
