Talk: Research & Restorative Justice: The Guardian and its Links with Historical Slavery

Join us for this special talk by Dr Cassandra Gooptar, which investigates the Guardian newspaper and its links with historical slavery.

The research conducted by Dr Gooptar as lead researcher of the Guardian Legacies of Enslavement project, with the expertise of the late Professor Trevor Burnard, formed the basis for a public apology and acknowledgement in 2023 by the Guardian for its links with transatlantic slavery. Since then, the Guardian has produced an editorial response in the form of the award-winning Cotton Capital articles and podcasts.

Dr Gooptar’s research helped lay the foundation for a 10-year, £10m restorative justice programme committed by the Guardian to support community projects and programmes in Jamaica, Brazil, the Sea Islands and Manchester descendant communities. The Guardian and the Wilberforce Institute, University of Hull currently have a 3-year partnership to continue the research.

The investigation uncovered details of the sources of raw cotton supplies into the Derwent Valley Mills; from plantation to merchant to mill.

The talk will focus on the research, the editorial response and some of the restorative justice outputs of the Guardian Legacies of Enslavement project.
