Children of the Mills programme

Learn how one man and the power of water changed the world, before completing an engineering challenge of your own!

Enjoy a fully resourced, practical, enquiry-based STEM day of learning. Your pupils will use a variety of historical sources and investigate both Cromford Mills and Cromford Village to understand the efficiency of different power sources, the  types of water wheel and how Richard Arkwright harnessed waterpower on a large scale, for the first time at Cromford.

Pupils will use their learning to work in groups on a ‘design and make’ challenge.  This will involve building a waterwheel housing, creating water channels and ensuring the waterwheel can transfer power and movement.

Focus: STEM / Design & Technology

As well as Design & Technology and Science, this programme supports Geography and History.

Pupils will understand how key events (the Industrial Revolution) and individuals (Sir Richard Arkwright) in design and technology have helped shape the world. They will explore natural resources including forms of energy; use research and develop design criteria to inform the design of innovative, functional, appealing Products (water wheels) that are fit for purpose; generate, develop, model and communicate their ideas; select from and use a wider range of materials and components; show an understanding of mechanical systems in their products [for example, gears, pulleys, cams, levers and linkages]; evaluate their ideas and products against their own design criteria and consider the views of others to improve their work.

They will also develop contextual knowledge of the location of globally significant places, including their defining physical and human characteristics (KS2 Geography).

Duration: 5 hours ideally
